I believe that these cars might be negative switched? so that is why I'm having issues? Low beam side works fine, can't get high beam side to work unless I have +12v to both high and low beam? Got them bolted in and wired them up like this: Pink off of low beam power to low beam side on h4 connector, purple off of high beam shutter to high beam side on h4 connector, and white/black wires to ground. The headlights are also really fogged up and not easily cleanable. They are the HID headlights, and I've just had enough of dealing with the HID system, between the leveler screwing up and the passenger headlight randomly switching off. I have had problems with the passenger headlight ever since I got the car. Many HID-equiped Prius owners have reported that Chinese made bulbs don't last very long at all, so if you order on line or buy them in an aftermarket parts store, it's recommended to only buy Phillips or Osram bulbs.I have a 2005 Prius with 279K miles on it. Because of all the failures of the earlier D4R bulbs, Toyota may have started getting their bulbs from a different supplier & thus may have changed the part number to designate that (I know they chg'd the price from $300 per bulb to $150 per bulb). I don't think there was any different bulb for the '09 HID from the one used in the '06 thru '08 (nothing changed headlight wise until 2010), but the dealers may have started using a different Toyota part number in 2009. The D4R's would very often start burning out/acting up before 30,000 miles, but you can't interchange them for the more durable D2R's (something about the bulb & ballast pairing). I still have my original D2R HID headlight bulbs at 150,000 miles. The '04 & '05 Prius uses a different HID bulb (D2R) than your D4R (used in the '06 thru '09). Also, the HID's have a slighty bluish tint to them whereas the halogens have more of a yellow tint (I say this only in case somebody installed aftermarket fogs on your car before you got it-not likely if you bought it new). As fdrett44 said in his post, you can tell you have HID's if you have fog lights in the lower radiator grill (the fogs & HID's came together in certain option pkg's-no fogs, then you have halogen bulbs). The pix you just posted don't help to identify which type of bulb you have for your headlights. The good news is that the owners manual has reasonably good documentation about the process, but you'll find the graphics in the manual to be only vaguely like the actual appearance of the headlight housing in the Prius. I've replaced headlamps on a number of different brands of cars and this is by far the most needlessly complex headlight bulb retention and protection design I've ever seen. One to do the dirty work and one to hold the flashlight to get light in so you can kind of see what you are doing.įor the most part I have done these light bulb replacements nearly by brail due to the small space available to get your hand into and because you are basically operating upside down when removing the weather cover and getting access to the bulb. Although many videos online show a single person doing the blub replacement, it helps to have two pairs of hands. On both sides of the vehicle the blubs are difficult to get to because of both the location of the headlamps in relation to the contents of the engine compartment, and the manner in which the bulbs are sealed from the outside world and secured.

The mounting system for the halogen blub is a disaster. When I had to replace them I went down a notch to the less bright halogens, but they have a much longer life. The high intensity Silverstar bulbs are bright, but they burn out way too fast. The first time I put in the high intensity Phillips Silverstar bulbs to replace the original factory bulbs and that was a disaster. I've replaced the halogen bulbs twice in the past year. I'm so glad I have a 2005 package 5 without the fog lamps and without the HID headlamps.
